from my journal November 30
Bill was a family man, a partner in a large law firm and
head of the community foundation board. I was on the staff.. For years Bill had
been quietly fighting cancer. He was back in the hospital, this time he had his
nose removed.“ I’ll have a dressing over the hole,” he said, “but I’m still
going to the conference.” On the plane he was as upbeat as ever. Suddenly he
sneezed. I blurted, “I didn’t know you could sneeze without a nose.” He said:“Sure, and I have a built in handkerchief.”
